Link 22 airborne SPC 1921

Link 22 is developed by and is under configuration control of the "NATO Improved Link 11" (NILE) program, conducted collaboratively by seven nations under the aegis of a Memorandum of Under­standing (MOU). Link 22 is not limited to NATO nations but operation needs agreement by the NILE program and the United States of America. Tactical messages are defined by NATO STANAG 5522.

The SPC 1921 is the airborne version of the naval SPC 1920, built by porting the SPC 1920 func­tionality to airborne suitable hardware. The SPC 1921 incorporates one functional Signal Processing Controller (SPC) entity, providing single-channel operation for Link 22.

Three (of totally four) NILE defined communication modes are fully implemented: HF Fixed Frequency (HFFF), UHF Fixed Frequency (UHFFF), and UHF-EPM. The "missing" mode HF-EPM is ready for implementation but pending due to US regulations on TRANSEC availability. A proprietary AES-based TRANSEC solution – enabled by relaxed standardization – can be provided on demand but at the expense of lost interoperability.

The SPC 1921 form factor is an ARINC-600 2 MCU chassis, comparable to ARINC-404 1/4 ATR short.
